The monumental complex of Asclepeio, the ancient medical center, is situated 4 km to the north of Kos island, beyond Platani village giving to the visitor a spectacular view of the coasts of Asia Minor. It was built to honor the god of health and medicine, Asklepios, at the first half of 3rd century BC, after the death of the famous ancient Greek physician, Hippocrates.
The Ancient Market
The most important archaeological site in the Town of Kos is the Old Agora, the Market Place of Kos, considered to be one of the largest in the ancient world. The castle of the Knights of Saint John
At the entrance of Kos harbor, on what it is used to be an island in antiquity, is located the The Castle of the Knights of the Order of Saint John. The Castle consists of two defensive precincts, communicated with the inland through a bridge that one can still see even today namely the bridge of “Phoinikon” (Palm Trees) Avenue.
The plane tree of Hippocrates
In the centre of the island, in front of the Castle of Knights, stands a huge old plane tree, known as the Hippocrates plane tree. The myth says that Hippocrates used to sit under this plane tree and teach his students. Allegedly the oldest tree in Europe.
At the Archaeological Museum of Kos the visitor will see all the findings that came to light during the excavations that are carried out in the island by the beginning of century and up today. Among them is the world known statue of Hippocrates.
